The Bill HB1997 was transmitted to the Governor as of May 5, 2016

Description: “Implements the recommendation of the Hawaii Agriculture Workforce Advisory Board to create and agriculture workforce development pipeline initiative to conduct training on all islands for teachers and school administrators in agricultural self-sufficiency.”

The Bill HB2657 was transmitted to the Governor as of May 5, 2016.

Description: “Amends the Molokai diversified agricultural revolving loan program established by Act 387, SLH 1988, to provide cost reimbursements to Molokai farmers and rancher to reimburse costs of mandated food safety compliance audits and other related costs”

Despite these bills being passed, there is not enough support from the community to create a big change of food sustainability.  Yes, little changes are happening, but not drastic enough to change the way our whole food system works.

In order to address this issue, we need to build up more organizations like Kokua Hawaii Foundation with missions of helping our environment and educating our children.  All in all, we need to build communities that is all about saving and protecting our land in order to make drastic changes.

Visiting Elementary Schools and having a lesson with them about food sustainability and what they can do to help is a step in the right direction.  If we don’t educate the children of Hawaii, then who will?
